When a new system is introduced there will always be at least one person in charge to ensure that it runs smoothly. They will normally be ICT literate and have a good understanding of technical ideas. Their role will be to ensure that the system is set up correctly, configured and ensure the smooth day to day running of the system.

In order to help them they will have the technical documentation produced by the developer. There is a good chance that the administrator, the person who will be looking after the new system, will have been involved in the development of the system but they would not of actually done any of the programming. They will need to know how the database was set up, how the system can be configured and what hardware is required to install the system. They will also need access to the design documents and code so they can get a deeper understanding of the system.

Technical documentation will include -

  • Any form of diagrams used in analysis/design (such as DFD's)
  • The data structure
  • Source code
  • Design documents
  • Hardware and software requirement
  • Configuration guide and options.
